Done got me some digital musics

March 19, 2008

After being frustrated by iTunes for so long for not letting me download music with a Hong Kong credit card, and after struggling dull-techedly with torrents and having only haphazard success with Limewire, I was warmly pleased today to finally strike upon eMusic.

EMusic lets me choose from a selection of 2 million indie — and only indie — songs for US33 cents each. Now I can feel good about paying for great music produced by indie musicians and still have the convenience of downloading. There’s no DRM on any of the songs, so I can shift ‘em from my iTunes to my MP3 player to my computer at work with ease and total freedom. And the site keeps an update of new stuff coming in, with reliably good reviews from both editors and users. I’m stoked.

Today I have already downloaded:

Beach HouseDevotion

Fuck ButtonsStreet Horrrsing

The NationalBoxer

Stephen Malkmus and the JicksReal Emotional Trash

Devendra BanhartOh Me, Oh My (nod to commenter on last post — I presume that was you, Murdoch)

BeirutThe Flying Club Cup

Boards of Canada Hi Scores

One day I’ll be cool like you.

    Right now, Hamish.
Have you any advice for a bewildered couple arriving in HK on Monday June 9, leaving early Wed June 11, for Ireland via London. Where to stay? What to do, for a few hours…when not reclining or showering.. where to eat?? can you spare us a few hours so we can shout you a meal?

“2 million indie — and only indie”

    Gee. Sounds really great.
All that indie music that no one has ever heard of.
Are they really worth 33 cents a song?

    Hey Hamish

From eMusic, can I also recommend Calexico and Yo La Tengo (if you don^t have them already)?

John — perhaps eMusic isn’t for you. Best to stick to iTunes, or, better, the top 20 rack at your nearest WalMart. Enjoy your John Mayer — but please don’t let him harm others.

Thanks for the recommendations, Tim. I’m already a Yo La Tengo fan, and I’m listening to my newly-downloaded Calexico right now. Good stuff.

I’ve subscribed to emusic for 6 months and have been pleasantly surprised with the breadth of their selection.

If you’re looking for the new Eagles album or the Rolling Stones’ back catalog, you’ll be disappointed. But there’s lots of good indie music, some offbeat older stuff (like Flo & Eddie) and jazz, too.

And if you combine emusic with http://www.kexp.org, you can hear and buy new music.

The only downside is that if you’re not careful you can end up buying something that the original artist has re-recorded to avoid a copyright hassle with their record company.
